Founded on September 19, 1963, at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was established during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. The fraternity’s motto, “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One,” reflects its commitment to forging a new path of excellence and brotherhood.

Rich History and Foundation

Iota Phi Theta was founded by twelve men who sought to create an inclusive fraternity that addressed the needs and aspirations of African American men. The fraternity has grown to include over 300 chapters and has initiated more than 30,000 members. Notable members include Congressman Bobby Rush and civil rights activist Eldridge Cleaver.
